Environmental health - Public Health

Environmental Health has officers working in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek, as well as visiting remote communities.

Environmental Health is supported by a small operational program and policy development team.

Officers ensure that businesses comply with the following legislation:

• Public and Environmental Health Act 2011
• Food Act 2004.

Role

The work of Environmental Health includes:

• registration and regulation of food businesses, body art, beauty therapy, hairdressing and commercial visitor accommodation
• to develop and maintain environmental health projects that improve living conditions in Aboriginal communities
• waste water management regulation outside of Northern Territory building control areas
• nuisance and food business complaint resolution
• drinking water guidance and education.

Environmental Health comprises a number of discrete services including:

• radiation protection
• Aboriginal environmental health
• food safety
• wastewater management
• water quality.

How to become an Environmental Health Officer (EHO)

To become an Environment Health Officer (EHO) you can complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health or if you have completed another suitable Bachelor’s degree, you can complete a post graduate qualification in environmental health.

There are no courses currently offered in the Northern Territory however you can complete the course online.

Environmental Health Bush Book

The Environmental Health Bush Book introduces key concepts and topics related to environmental health within the context of working in remote communities across the Northern Territory, including:

• housing
• water quality
• wastewater management
• food safety
• vector management
• health promotion.

It aims to highlight the importance of environmental health and demonstrate how improvements to conditions and practices can support better public health outcomes.

The book is designed to support initial learning and to direct readers to organisations, particularly government agencies and units, for further assistance.
