Cryptosporidiosis

Cryptosporidiosis, often referred to as ‘crypto’ is an infection of the bowel caused by the parasite Cryptosporidium parvum.

Spread can occur through consumption of food or water contaminated by the faeces of infected people or animals.

It can also be acquired through unpasteurised dairy products.

Cryptosporidium is relatively resistant to chlorine disinfection and can be present in swimming pools.

Notifiable disease

Cryptosporidiosis is a notifiable disease.
