Ciguatera fish poisoning
Ciguatera poisoning is a type of food poisoning which is caused by eating certain types of fish. These fish are normally reef fish found in warm tropical waters. They eat a type of algae called Gambierdiscus toxicus, which makes ciguatoxins.
There are over 300 fish species that can cause Ciguatera. Some of these are found in the Gove and Groote Eylandt areas in the NT.
