Stay safe this Territory Day

Published

Territory Day is a time for celebration, but it’s important to remember that fireworks can cause serious injury if not used properly.

Here are some safety tips for you and your family this Territory Day:

  • supervise children at all times around fireworks
  • never point or throw fireworks at another person
  • avoid wearing synthetic, flammable clothing around fireworks
  • Never ignite aerial fireworks near or below trees, near an opening to a building or anything else it may hit
  • don’t drop fireworks into a bin or leave them unattended
  • never pick up or relight a dud firework. Wait 20 minutes, pour water on it and dispose of it properly
  • keep a hose and a few buckets of water close by
  • alcohol and fireworks don’t mix

If you receive a burn injury from a firework remember the 3 Cs.

  • cool it – under running water for 20 minutes
  • cover it – with cling wrap (eye pad or clean dressing if an eye injury)

call Triple Zero 000 – for an emergency response.
