Migraine Awareness Month

Show your support and wear shades for Migraine Day on 21 June.

June is Migraine Awareness Month, migraine is a complex genetic neurological disorder. Migraine episodes are characterised by a severe headache that can last between 4 and 72 hours, and may be accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and disruptions to vision known as 'aura'.

It is estimated that 20% of the Australian population live with migraine, and 71% of migraine sufferers are women. More than 90% of people living with migraine can't function normally during an attack.

Managing a migraine could involve:

  • taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, beta blockers, anti-nausea drugs, or migraine-specific drugs called 'triptans'
  • drinking beverages that contain caffeine
  • sleeping in a dark, quiet room
  • staying well hydrated
  • avoiding food triggers (food-related triggers occur in 10 to 20% of people with migraine).

Sunday 21 June is Shades for Migraine Day, raising awareness of this debilitating condition. Show your support by sharing a selfie wearing sunnies and use the hashtag #ShadesForMigraine.
