Alice Spring’s Sub-Acute Mental Health Facility

Learn more about our transitional treatment facility that minimises the need for hospitalisation.

Providing the right level of mental health support means walking alongside clients at every stage of their journey and responding to what they need at the time.

Sometimes that can mean offering community-based support, medication or counselling.

Sometimes it requires being admitted to hospital or an inpatient unit for around the clock care.

And sometimes, we offer something in between that maintains a client’s independence while providing a little extra support.

Taiwo Abraham manages the Sub-Acute Mental Health Facility in Alice Springs, a transitional treatment facility that minimises the need for hospitalisation. The facility encourages clients to exercise, contribute to cooking, and participate in activities like art, bowling, and trips to the cinema.

“Clients can voluntarily come here if they’re becoming unwell in community, but don’t yet need to be admitted for acute treatment. Other times we offer a step down after acute treatment if clients are recovering and are mostly stable but still need some assistance,” Taiwo said.

“It’s a home-like feel here. The clients are independent and can come and go as they wish. We look at their goals, where they want to go from here, and work with them to achieve those goals,” she said.

Taiwo leads a strong, busy, supportive team who are proud to contribute to success stories every day.

“It’s great seeing our past patients doing well and living their lives independently. When we see them out in community understanding and managing their illness, having a more positive outlook, and excelling at work, we always say hello and feel great knowing that we’ve made a difference.”
