NT Health (Prison Health, Primary Health Care – Central Australia) at Alice Springs Correctional Centre, is offering a unique opportunity for Registered Nurses undertake Post Graduate Studies in Remote Health or Primary Health Care.

This can be a one year (full time) or two year (part time) paid employment program (Graduate Certificate).

Successful applicants must be eligible for employment with PHC - Central Australia Health Service as a Registered Nurse and meet University enrolment criteria.

Alice Springs Correctional Centre (ASCC) Health Centre

The Alice Springs Correctional Centre (ASCC) is situated approximately 25kms by road south West of Alice Springs, off the Stuart Highway (in the “Old Man Plains” district). The prison Health centre is located within the Correctional Precinct.

The ASCC has a total capacity for 680 inmates in a variety of security classifications of both remanded and sentenced, adult males and females.

The ASCC serves as second maximum security prison for the Northern Territory, with up to 520 Prisoners accommodated in the main section and 160 prisoners accommodated in a low security environment located outside the main perimeter fence.

Prison Health staff provide onsite services at the ASCC, which is inclusive of a multidisciplinary team delivering various screenings, ‘Fit for Custody’ assessments and general primary care (acute and chronic) to prisoner clients.

Prison Health do not provide an afterhours nurse on call service.

Since 2018 the afterhours emergency service has been provided by MRaCC the Medical Retrieval and Consult Centre based at the ASH (Alice Springs Hospital).

Support requires a Correctional Officer calling the On call Medical Officer (via phone) for immediate advice and direction on clinical management.

They are using the ISBAR after hours communication tool to guide a medical consultation.

Program outcomes

  • Provide evidence-based best practice to deliver culturally safe health care
  • Incorporate theoretical knowledge to practical provision of care in a correctional service context
  • Provide holistic Population and Primary Health Care (PPHC) care to vulnerable populations in correctional settings while utilising evidence based best practice guidelines
  • Demonstrate ability to work within the organisations guidelines, procedures and policies
  • Provide high quality management of chronic conditions to people living in custodial care
  • Work with the multi-disciplinary teams to ensure that best health care outcomes for people living in custodial settings

Eligibility to apply

  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse or hold a dual degree (Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife) with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Minimum of one year post registration experience.
  • Meet eligibility and entry requirements for post graduate study relevant to the practice context.
  • Be able to work 7 day per week rostered shifts (morning, afternoon)
  • Programs are offered on a full time basis.

Conditions of the contract

You will be provided with leave to attend study sessions, however, must be able to work all rostered shifts.

You will be required to successfully complete academic course and clinical practice requirements each semester in order to continue the term of employment.

Fee information

Primary & Public Health Care, Central Australia Region will subsidise 100% of the cost associated with course costs.

University fees are paid for by the student and reimbursed through the organisation at the completion of each semester. To be eligible for re-imbursement students need to complete part one of Bi-law 41 at the commencement of each semester and part two on completion.

Clinical requirements

The Post Graduate Employment program aims to support clinicians to acquire the knowledge, skills and capacity to work as a Primary Health Care Nurse.

Theoretical clinical requirements will be provided by Flinders University or the university chosen by the individual.

Clinical experience and practical support will be provided by ASCC staff.

Orientation, Study Days and supernumerary shifts in the ASCC health centre will also be provided.
