The Employed Model Program is an exciting initiative through NT Health that supports registered nurses to gain employment, experience and certification in Critical Care Nursing.

Specifically, Alice Springs Hospital is offering registered nurses paid employment while completing their Graduate Certificate Critical Care (one year full time or two years of part time study).

Staff employed under this model will be financially supported to complete their Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing (Intensive Care, Emergency or Integrated) through a recognised University course.

Intensive Care Unit, Alice Springs Hospital

The Alice Springs Hospital Intensive Care Unit is a modern nationally accredited Level 2 Intensive Care Unit providing general intensive care services, including ventilation, renal replacement therapy and invasive cardiovascular monitoring for an indefinite period.

The unit consists of 10 beds and is well equipped including Hamilton S1/C6 and Draeger V800 ventilators, along with Prismax/Prismaflex CRRT Machines.

Emergency Department, Alice Springs Hospital

The ED is a 43 bed department including three resuscitation bays, four high dependency bays, a paediatric specific area and a fast track area.

The ED cares for patients who present from various modes including the Royal Flying Doctor transfers from remote communities.

We care for all types of emergency presentations including trauma and all medical emergencies in our well-equipped department.

Nurses coming to our ED are provided with fantastic opportunities to progress through all areas of the department with support and tailored education packages to assist them in upskilling.

Our friendly and committed multidisciplinary team work closely together to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.

Professional development program

The formal program occurs over 12 months with a requirement to be working in the unit for 4-12 months prior to commencing formal study.

Attendance to practical study days are supported on site and include:

  • Invasive Monitoring
  • Airway assessment and management
  • Invasive and Non-Invasive Ventilation
  • Advanced Life Support.

Participants will also be supported to undertake a one week rotation into Perioperative Services to upskill in Airway support.

Who are eligible

To apply for the program you must:

  • be an Australian citizen or hold a visa allowing ongoing, full-time employment in Australia (a copy of your visa or passport must be supplied with your cover letter and resume).
  • at least twelve months recent nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • be or plan to be enrolled in a recognised Graduate Certificate of Critical Care Nursing for 2024.

Conditions of the contract

You will be provided with leave to attend study sessions, however, must be able to work all rostered shifts.

You will be required to successfully complete academic course and clinical practice requirements each semester in order to continue the term of employment and reimbursement.

Fee information

ASH Nursing and Midwifery Administration will subsidise 100 percent of the cost associated with each unit of study (up to $2,750 per subject).

Any course cost beyond $11,000 is covered by the employee.

Students are advised to consider the personal cost associated with choosing a university course where the cost of study exceeds $2,750 per unit.

University fees are paid for by the student and reimbursed through the organisation at the completion of each semester.

To be eligible for re-imbursement students need to complete part one of By-law 41 at the commencement of each semester and part two on completion.

Clinical requirements

The Post Graduate Employed Model Program aims to support clinicians to acquire the knowledge, skills and capacity to work as a Critical Care Nurses.

The program will allow nurses to apply their postgraduate learning into practice in an exciting and challenging clinical environment.

Each participant will be provided opportunity to work throughout the department.
