Central Australia Health Service (CAHS)

The Central Australia Health Service encompasses Acute Care Services, including Alice Springs Hospital and Tennant Creek Hospital, Primary and Public Health Care and Mental Health.

The region covers two-thirds or more than a million square kilometres of the Northern Territory (NT), extending into the bordering areas of South Australia and Western Australia, and caters to the health needs of not only the people who reside in the area, but also visiting interstate and overseas tourists.

In the most recent 2016 ABS census Central Australia had an estimated resident population of more than 42,000 people, representing around 18.5 per cent of the total NT population.

Almost 60 per cent of the Central Australia population live in Alice Springs (24,753), 7.5 per cent in Tennant Creek (3,503) with more than 20 per cent (8,563) in the Barkly region.

The remainder of the population live in remote communities and on outstations, cattle stations, police stations, road houses, mine and exploration sites, and in and around Yulara/Uluru. Aboriginals make up more than 33 per cent of the total Central Australia population.
