Mosquito Monitors program – Tennant Creek

Are you interested in becoming a citizen scientist?

Mozzie Monitors is a national citizen science program advancing scientific knowledge on mosquito prevalence and activity.

NT Health in partnership with Adelaide University, is seeking enthusiastic residents to be part of the Mozzie Monitors program in Tennant Creek to help detect invasive mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases.

This will support our responsiveness to exotic mosquito detections and timely public health warnings.

What does a citizen scientist do?

The program is looking for interested Tennant Creek residents (with no prior scientific training required) who are able and willing to:

  • Operate a simple mosquito trap in their backyard.
  • Service the mosquito trap once a fortnight.
  • Take and send photographs of collected mosquitoes to the Mozzie Monitors team for identification and counting. Photographs are preferably taken with a smartphone and forwarded via email.
  • Send mosquito samples to the NT Health Medical Entomology unit for identification and counting.
  • Once a month, each citizen scientist will receive a report outlining the findings and information on the mosquitoes collected in their backyard.

What's provided?

Citizen scientists will be provided with:

  • a trap kit, including instructions on how to operate the trap and process the sample
  • initial training on how to operate the trap and sample processing
  • pre-paid envelopes to send mosquito samples to NT Health.
