Antiviral medicines are available to eligible patients with COVID-19, to help prevent severe illness or hospitalisation. While vaccination is still the best protection from becoming severely ill with COVID-19, antivirals provide further protection for those who need it most.

When to take antivirals

Antivirals should commence as soon as possible after you test positive for COVID-19 and within the first 5 days of COVID-19 symptoms so they can work at their best.

If you test positive, it’s important that you make a GP telehealth appointment as soon as possible, so you can be prescribed them if eligible.
