Over-the-counter codeine product advice

Over-the-counter codeine containing medicines will be prescription only nationally from 1 February 2018.

Information for consumers, health practitioners, wholesalers and product sponsors is available on the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) Codeine Hub.

An advice sheet for Northern Territory GPs is available to assist patients who present with codeine related issues.

Prescribers may find it helpful to use the Voluntary Contract Notification Scheme which has been operating in the Northern Territory since the late 1990s.

Voluntary contracts assist pescribers to mange specific patient medicines by limiting dispensing to a specific pharmacy and specifying collection interval for the medicine from the pharmacy (Staged Supply) e.g. twice a week, once a week on Thursday.

Patient voluntary contracts details are available on the S8 website.

Please contact Medicines and Poisons Control to discuss access.
