The 2020 Northern Territory Recruitment campaign for Resident Medical Officers is now open, and will be accepted until midnight Wednesday 24 July 2019.

Positions are available to work for the:

  • Central Australian Health Service incorporating Alice Springs and Tennant Creek hospitals
  • Top End Health Service  incorporating Royal Darwin, Palmerston Regional, Katherine and Gove District hospitals.

Intake opportunities are available for both 2020 January and/or July commencement.

KH ED  (Katherine Hospital Emergency Department)

Katherine Hospital is a 60 bed regional hospital located approximately 350 km south of Darwin.   Katherine Hospital has a mixed specialist/generalist medical workforce model that provides well-supported training opportunities and a friendly collegial style.

The hospital has a busy emergency department with 15,000 presentations per annum.  The obstetrician-supported maternity unit has around 300 deliveries per annum and the general physician team manages around 1,000 medical admissions per annum.  Visiting surgical and other specialty services provide effective and integrated links to services across the Top End health network. The Katherine ED has a 24 hour roster with a mix of day, evening and night shifts across 7 days.

Please only preference a Katherine Hospital allocation if you meet the following requirements.

  • 6 months ED experience in Australian hospital or comparable jurisdiction
  • 3 months paediatric experience OR 6mo+ working in ED with  paediatric presentations
  • Neonatal resuscitation training
  • ALS1 training
  • Completion of minimum one 3-month rotation at RDH preferably Critical Care rotation.

GDH (Gove District Hospital)

GDH is a 30-bed hospital providing Medical, Surgical, Paediatric, Obstetric and Emergency services to the mining town of Nhulunbuy and the remote Aboriginal communities of East Arnhem Land.

Gove (Nhulunbuy) is located 1000km east of Darwin in Eastern Arnhem Land. The 24 hour roster has a mix of day, evening and night shifts across 7 days.

MED R (Med Relief)

Relief term with medical ward nights rostered in a rotating pattern, interspersed with planned relief for other medical RMO positions (listed below)

RDH General Medicine

Working with one of the five general medicine teams at RDH. Teams of 2 registrars and 3 JMOs on a rotating roster. Mix of days, evenings and weekends.  General medicine teams admit new patients one day in five.

Cardiology

Working with the cardiology team, undertaking admitting duties, ward duties and conducting exercise stress tests. Mix of day and weekend day/ evening shifts.

Renal

Working with renal inpatients at Royal Darwin Hospital. Mix of day and weekend day/ evening shifts.

IFD

Infectious Diseases term, working with the infectious diseases team with inpatients at the Royal Darwin Hospital. Mix of day and weekend day/ evening shifts.

Pal Care

Working with the palliative care team, based in the Royal Darwin hospital Hospice. Mix of day and weekend day/ evening shifts.

Haematology

Working with the haematology team primarily inpatient work. Mix of day and weekend day/ evening shifts.

Oncology

Working with the oncology team, primarily inpatient work. Mix of day and weekend day/ evening shifts.

RAPU

Team of residents providing 24-hour coverage to the Rapid Assessment and Planning Unit, a 24 bed short stay ward located on the ground floor of the Royal Darwin Hospital. Currently a mix of surgical and medical patients. 24 hour roster mix of day, evening and night shifts across 7 days.

DPH

Provides 24 hour RMO assistance to the Darwin Private Hospital located on the Royal Darwin Hospital Campus. Rotating roster of 4 days on / 4 days off/ 4 nights on/ 4 nights off.

PRH General Medicine

Working at Palmerston Regional Hospital on the 24 bed medical ward, Rotating roster of 4 days on / 4 days off/ 4 nights on/ 4 nights off.

Rehabilitation

Working at Palmerston Regional Hospital on the 24 bed Rehabilitation ward. Mainly day shifts with some evening cover and weekend ward round commitments.

Geriatrics

Working at Palmerston Regional Hospital on the 24 bed Geriatric ward. Mainly day shifts with some evening cover and weekend ward round commitments.

Working with one of the General Surgery team, Vascular Team or Surgical Acute Care Unit ( SACU) Mix of day and weekend shifts, with one block of ward cover ( 2 -3 weeks of evenings and nights ) in a 13 week term.

PRH General Surgery

Working in theatres at Palmerston Regional Hospital, predominantly day shifts with one block of ward cover (2 -3 weeks of evenings and nights at Royal Darwin Hospital ) in a 13 week term.

Plastic Surgery

Working with the Plastic Surgery Team, looking after the plastic surgery inpatients, and assisting in outpatient clincis and theatres. Weekday shifts and some weekend day shifts.

ENT

Working with the Ear Nose and Throat Team, looking after ENT inpatients and assisting in outpatient clinics and theatres. Weekday shifts and some weekend day shifts.

MFU

Working with the Maxillo-facial surgery team, looking after MFU inpatients and assisting in outpatient clinics and theatres Weekday shifts and some weekend day shifts.

Neurosurgery

ICU

Working in the Intensive Care Unit with a team of Registrars and Intensivists. Most placements in 2020 will be 6 month placements, however there are 2 single term placements available in Term 1 and Term 4. Roster is a mix of day (8-12 hours in duration)  and night shifts across 7 days.

ED

Working in the Emergency Department at either RDH or PRH. Each term 6 RMO‘s will commence a 6 month ED placement. 24-hour roster mix of day, evening and night shifts across 7 days

Anaesthetics

Working in the Anaesthetics department – theatre work, with pain rounds and pre-admission clinic exposure. Day shifts rostered across 7 days. Can be accessed via the critical care stream, O & G stream, Rural stream and General Stream.

Contracts

RMO’s employed for the 2020 year will be offered 12 month contracts to Sunday 17th January 2021. However CAHS supports workplace flexibility and shorter contracts to a minimum of 3 months can be negotiated.

Rotations

Pre-vocational RMO rotations offer a general, well rounded experience leading to a diverse range of vocational options. Rotations are allocated to RMOs by a selection committee and the Directors of Clinical Training. Rotations are awarded according to a combination of RMO preference, training needs and commitment to service in Central Australia and the Northern Territory.

While contracts are offered on a 12 monthly basis, prevocational training planning and pathways can be structured over one, two or three years and take into account the needs of the individual Junior Doctor and tenure of employment at ASH.
