Alice Springs Hospital medical officer recruitment

Introduction

Alice Springs Hospital provides a unique experience for medical staff. The hospital serves a large but sparsely populated area of 1 million square kilometres with a population of 50,000 including the tri-state area of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.

The hospital cares for some of the nation’s most socially disadvantaged people, with high levels of morbidity and mortality, and many with conditions rarely seen elsewhere in the country..

Alice Springs Hospital is a very unique hospital, located 1500 km from the nearest tertiary centre. One third of the population are Indigenous people. An additional 600,000 tourists pass though Alice Springs.

Seventy per cent of hospital admissions are Indigenous and disease burden and comorbidities are very high.

At least half of the people served are Indigenous Australians. Primary health care in the remote areas is often provided by nurses and Aboriginal health practitioners with only infrequent visits provided by doctors. Many of our families have a limited understanding of Western medicine while having a vast repository of knowledge about their own culture, different local languages and country.

About Central Australia

Central Australia offers spectacular natural scenery and offers an attractive lifestyle for both living and working. The work is complex and always interesting. The region is a tourist mecca, and Alice has a strong sense of community. The town has a variety of sports and cultural activities reflecting its multicultural heart.

The central desert region of Australia is unique in its ancient landforms that continue to hold the life giving ancestral stories for the local Aboriginal people. There are 15 different Aboriginal language groups in this region and Aboriginal people represent at least 30 per cent of the local population.

Alice Springs is on the traditional lands of the Arrernte people. The name of Alice Springs is more properly Mparntwe. It is the site of the Caterpillar Dreaming, amongst many other Dreaming stories important to this area. It is a friendly, welcoming place suited to doctors with a sense of adventure and those interested in Indigenous health.
