Top End communities celebrate Health Centre openings

The Top End communities of Numbulwar, Umbakumba and Ngukurr are celebrating this month with the opening of three key health centres.

The Ngukurr Health Centre was officially opened on Monday 11 September and will be operated by the Sunrise Aboriginal Health Service.

The Umbakumba Health Centre on the Territory’s Groote Eylandt was opened on Thursday 14 September, followed by Numbulwar centre which was opened as part of the community’s annual festival on Friday 15 September. 

The $5.9 million Numbulwar health centre and $5.8 million Ngukurr Health Centre were both funded by the Commonwealth’s Health and Hospitals Fund Regional Priority program – a $50.29 million program to upgrade 11 remote health centres across the NT.

The $6 million Umbakumba health centre was funded by a Regional Partnership Agreement with $3 million from Groote Eylandt Bickerton Island Enterprises, $2 million from the Northern Territory Government and $1 million from the Commonwealth.

Some of the upgrades include a state-of-the-art emergency room, dental and renal rooms, as well as extra clinic rooms and with culturally appropriate purpose built designs.
