Important Information:

The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme

The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme commenced in the NT on 1 July 2010.  The health practitioner categories which joined the National Scheme on this date are chiropractors, dental professions (dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists and dental prosthetists), medical practitioners, nurses and midwives, optometrists, osteopaths, pharmacists, physiotherapists, podiatrists and psychologists.

Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) was established to provide support to the National Boards.

In the Northern Territory, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is also providing administrative support to the three Northern Territory Boards;

- Aboriginal Health Workers Board

- Occupational Therapists Board

- Radiographers Board

The following professions will join the national registration and accreditation scheme as of 1 July 2012:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners (including Aboriginal Health Workers registered in the NT as at 30 June 2012).
  • Chinese Medical Practitioners
  • Occupational Therapists (including Occupational Therapists registered in the NT as at 30 June 2012).
  • Medical Radiation Practitioners (including Radiographers registered in the NT as at 30 June 2012).

 

Under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009, the Australian Health Ministers established the following national boards to regulate the professions listed above.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia
  • Chinese Medicine Board of Australia
  • Occupational Therapy Board of Australia
  • Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia

Over the next year, the primary focus of these Boards is to ensure all is in readiness for the transition of regulation of the professions to the national scheme. This work includes the development of the mandatory registration standards.

Practitioners, employers, current regulators, professional bodies and other stakeholders will be invited to participate in the consultation process associated with the finalisation of the standards.
