Katherine District Hospital Career Opportunities

Katherine District Hospital a 60-bed facility, services a population of 24,000 and is located 300km south of Darwin in the Top End of Australia. Medical staff work closely with Care Flight for emergency transfers and specialist services operating from Royal Darwin Hospital. There is a high trauma workload and substantial exposure to patients with sepsis and complex medical illness retrieved from some of the most remote communities in the world.

An education program featuring visiting specialist lectures, electronic link up to grand rounds and other training opportunities at Royal Darwin Hospital, as well as regular case presentations by staff are part of the varied teaching opportunities. The hospital has accredited training posts in General Practice and Dip Obs, and staff committing to longer term placement may be supported for advanced in these areas, as well as training in general medicine and anaesthetics.

The town of Katherine enjoys the monsoon tropical climate and is close to spectacular Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) and Kakadu National Park. A great place for families and young children, the town has 5 primary schools and 2 high schools, multiple sports and social clubs along with close access to fishing, canoeing and hiking in the spectacular gorge. Local residents frequently make use of cheaper Darwin based flights to Bali, Singapore, Phuket and other Asian destinations for holidays.

Candidates must have four years or higher postgraduate experience, a broad range of experience and be able to work without direct supervision. Doctors who have good general practice skills will be able to work well in this environment and will be exposed to a broad range of medical experience across rural, remote and Indigenous health. GP Fellowship and advanced skills such as JCCA accreditation or DipObs would be an advantage.

The hospital is accredited for General Practice training and fully supported by specialists based in Darwin. Trainees with ACRRM or RACGP are encouraged to apply and may share training with local General Practitioners and Aboriginal Medical Services. The hospital is also accredited for the Basic Diploma with RANZCOG in Obstetrics. Candidates share work locations between Katherine and Royal Darwin Hospitals for the Advanced Obstetric Diploma.

The hospital specifically tailors rosters to the training and recreational needs of the individual. Short term staff contracts are available to suitable candidates.

Remuneration packages of between $164 135 and $207 357 are available, depending on skills and experience. All remuneration will be based on Medical Officers Workplace Agreement. Service periods range from 3 to 24 months (renewable). Assistance with relocation and subsidised accommodation is available.
