Territorians reclaim the night

Friday 30 October 2009

Territorians will this evening (Friday 30 October) rally for survivors of sexual assault.

'Reclaim the Night' is an annual event held around the world on the last Friday of October since 1973. It raises awareness about the levels of sexual crimes across the globe.

Women, men, young people and kids are encouraged to continue this tradition and march in Palmerston tonight.

"This is part of the International Acknowledgement of Women's Right to Live Safely in Our Community," said Director of Family and Individual Support Services, Fran O'Toole.

"It is so important that we continue to fight against sex crimes, sexual abuse and sexual violence in every way we can.

"Tonight will have a strong youth focus and will include the march and rally as well as music and performances."

'Reclaim the Night' is coordinated by the non government organisation Ruby Gaea with assistance from the Department of Health and Families.

"Ruby Gaea has a long association with the Northern Territory Government.

"We are proud to sponsor Ruby Gaea which has devoted more than twenty years of experience to providing support services to victims of sexual assault in the NT," added Ms O'Toole.

"I encourage all Territorians to join the fight against sexual crimes. Come along and Reclaim the Night!"
