Stinger season traditionally starts on 1 October but according to Public Health Physician Steven Skov the hot, humid weather and warmer sea waters already being experienced in the Top End are likely to prompt the early return of box jellyfish.
"Although stingers can be found in our waters year-round, from now until May next year we will see them at their peak. It's particularly important that during Stinger Season everyone stays safe if they're around the water," Dr Skov said.
"Box jellyfish are difficult to see in the water because the main part of their body, the 'bell' which can be up to 20 centimetres across, is colourless.
"An adult box jellyfish can have 40 or more tentacles, each up to two metres in length and loaded with a potentially lethal poison that can attack the heart.
"Their venom is known to kill humans in as little as 20 minutes. Small children are most at risk as their small bodies have a tougher time fighting the strong poison.
"As well as being potentially fatal, stings are excruciatingly painful. Each year about 40 people present to Top End health facilities as a result of contact with stingers."
Dr Skov says people should also be wary about wading in shallow waters close to the shore.
"Box jellyfish prefer calmer conditions and are commonly found in the shallows at the water's edge, as well as in tidal creeks and around boat ramps," he said.
"If you feel you must be in the water, then cover up. Wear a shirt and long trousers but make sure they are not too loose as jellyfish can become trapped between the material and the skin.
"It's also important that children are closely supervised at the beach and near waterways to ensure they stay well clear of the water at all times."
If someone does get stung:
- Douse the area with plenty of vinegar if you have it
- If any tentacles are on the skin you can pull them off (the skin on your fingers is too thick for the sting to penetrate)
- Take the person to the hospital
- If they are really unwell you may have to do CPR or call an ambulance
