Boost for NT Nurses and Midwives numbers

Tuesday 3 November 2009

Today's launch of the 2009 Nursing and Midwifery Recruitment Campaign marks the latest phase in boosting the Northern Territory's team of skilled nurses and midwives.

Chief Executive of the Department of Health and Families (DHF), Dr David Ashbridge, launched the campaign and said the Territory is a great place work and live.

"The Northern Territory offers the perfect combination of challenging and exciting workplaces for nurses and midwives," said Dr. Ashbridge.

"DHF is confident that the Territory has much to offer nursing and midwifery graduates, as well as qualified nurses and midwives, from Australia and indeed all around the world.

"Today is the start of a new, multi-faceted campaign, which is one of the strategies NT Health is using to attract quality health workers to our clinics and hospitals," Dr Ashbridge added.

The campaign targets both nursing and midwifery graduates (GIANTS), and experienced nurses and midwives (UNIQUE). Information can be accessed via information packs, recruitment packs or online on the recruitment website.

There is also a targeted recruitment program and education incentives, as well as 'up-skilling' opportunities for nurses such as the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery and the Graduate Diploma of Nursing (Renal Nursing).

"In a time when the global health workforce faces continuing shortages, the Northern Territory is recording levels of staff retention," Dr Ashbridge added.

"Staff turnover from September 2004 - September 2009 has been reduced by almost 30 per cent.

"This just shows what all Territorians already know: it's a great place to live and work."
