Schedule 8 and Restricted Schedule 4 Clinical Advisory Committee (CLAC)

Functions of the Committee under the Poisons and Dangerous Drugs Act 

  • advise the Chief Health Officer (CHO) about the competency required by medical practitioners to supply S8 substances
  • make recommendations to the CHO concerning appropriate training programs for medical practitioners who are to supply S8 substances
  • provide expert advise to the CHO about the treatment of persons (whether generally or in relation to a particular person) with S8 substances
  • advise the CHO in relation to the granting, variation, suspension or revocation of authorisation to supply S8 substances
  • make recommendation to the CHO about the issuing of the Guidelines 
  • provide advice to the CHO about whether matters relating to the supply of a S8 substance should be referred to the Medical Board of the NT
  • advise the CHO about policy issues in relation to the supply and use of S8 and restricted S4 substances and
  • receive in writing other matters referred by the CHO.

Membership of the Committee

  • Members are appointed by the CHO and the Committee must include the following: 
  • a medical practitioner with expertise in pain management 
  • a medical practitioner nominated by the NT Division of General Practice 
  • a medical practitioner nominated by the Australian Medical Association
  • a medical practitioner employed by the Department of Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Program
  • a non medical person employed by the Department of Health Alcohol and Other Drugs Program 
  • a pharmacist nominated by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia NT Branch and 
  • any other person with suitable qualifications and experience appointed by the CHO.

The Committee meets face to face 3 times a year.
