A strong community is one that supports its members and values the varied contributions that all make. When older people are fully involved in their community there are extra benefits including passing on of cultural knowledge and building strong intergenerational relations.
2011 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award
The Northern Territory Government acknowledges the significant and valuable contribution that senior Territorians make to our community through the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award. The exhibition highlights the achievements of older Territorians and encourages excellence in artistic expression. The exhibition originally commenced as a one off event to celebrate the International Year of the Older Person in 1999.
The Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award is hosted by the Office of the Speaker, Department of the Legislative Assembly.
An Acquisition Award of $7,000, generously sponsored by the Government House Foundation, is being offered for the winning original portrait of one or more senior Territorians. The Department of the Legislative Assembly will be providing a new $2,000 Second Prize and a $500 Third Prize, in addition to the $1,000 People's Choice Prize for the artwork that receives the highest number of votes from the public.

Entry forms must be received by close of business, Thursday 1 September 2011.
The exhibition will be in the Main Hall, Parliament House from 12 - 27 October 2011.
Senior Australian of the Year - Northern Territory
The Senior Australian of the Year Award recognises Australians aged 60 and over who continue to achieve and contribute. The award commenced in the International Year of Older Persons in 1999. The Northern Territory Senior Australian of the Year is announced in October and is then considered for the National Senior Australian of the Year, who is announced on Australia Day.
