Seniors Month - August 2012

Seniors Month - August

Seniors Month is held in August each year and is a fantastic month for older people in the Northern Territory. It's a great opportunity to celebrate the positive aspects of ageing.

Seniors Month activities and events are aimed at encouraging older people to have a healthy lifestyle, become involved in a new activity, connect to the community and to create opportunities for continued involvement in activities.

Organisations, businesses and individuals are encouraged to get on board and consider their involvement for August 2012.

Grants Program

Grant applications are now open until 23 March 2012!

The Northern Territory Government offers grants of up to $2,000 to assist community organisations and businesses to hold innovative events and activities for seniors during Seniors Month.

Application forms and guidelines are attached:

In previous years we have found that in some cases, once grant recipients receive their funding the events/activities are booked out by the members of their club/organisation before they are advertised to the general community

The purpose of Seniors Month is to provide new opportunities for seniors to be involved and participate in new activities. It is a condition of the grant funding that a minimum 50 % of the places should be made available to people outside of their club/organisation and should not be booked out before advertising in the Senior's Month Calender.

Seniors Month Calendar of Events

Registrations for promotion in the 2012 Seniors Month Calendar are now open. Registrations need to be submitted and details of the event / activity finalised by 25th May 2012 at the latest for inclusion in the calendar.

All funded activities are included in the Seniors Month Calendar of Events which is distributed Territory- wide and mailed out to all NT Seniors Card holders during July.

In addition to these activities it is great to see many other businesses and organisations that get on board and host their own special events for seniors.

Anyone running an activity for seniors during August is welcome to register to be included in the Seniors Month Calendar of Events. The listing is free of charge, and provides details of the date, time and contact details for the activity.

Last year's calendar may be downloaded as a guide to activity ideas:

Activity Ideas

Whether you are seeking funding or want to host your own event but short on ideas, you might also like to try to think outside the square! Be inventive and try redesigning a usual activity or brainstorm alternative ways and innovative solutions to involve more people. Perhaps you could seek the support of, or partner with, other community groups such as service clubs, neighbourhood centres, schools or your local council.

Here are some activities from the past few years to get you thinking:

Get physically active
Get out and active with sessions of aerobics, tai chi and yoga, gym classes, swimming or walking.

Learn something new
Can your organisation teach seniors new skills? Classes have been offered in a range of activities: computing, woodwork, ballroom dancing, Scottish dancing and crafts.

'Come-and-Try' sessions
Can you offer the chance for seniors to try something new? Sessions have been offered for golf, sailing, abseiling, rock climbing and clay-target shooting.

Information
Provide information on financial planning or health and wellbeing. Invite a guest speaker, hold a lecture, expo or open day. Visit a museum, garden or historical site.

Intergenerational activities
Partner with either primary or high school students or a youth group for shared activities such as art shows, learning how to use mobile phones and computers, games, history, classroom assistance or mentoring. School concerts have also been very successful.

Get mentally active
Try memoir writing or bridge, organise a quiz night, or try sudoku instead of bingo.
